One of the primary missions at Dos Cuerpos is to delve into the history of all our products – who creates them, why and how they're crafted – but also to explore the historical, social, and artistic dimensions that our products have embraced. With that in mind, we'd like to share the evolution of wine production in Coahuila.
Beyond being a prominent silver provider and housing Mexico's largest steel producer, Coahuila has made significant strides to become one of the states with the highest wine production, boasting over 40 vineyards and 300 labels. The cultivation regions encompass Parras, Arteaga, and Saltillo, where the warm and dry climate allows for the growth of the following grape varieties:
For white wine production:
Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, and Colombard.
For red wine production:
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Uva Lenoir, and Rosa del Perú.
Coahuila now accounts for 10% of Mexico's total wine production. It has achieved such success that some even argue its Chardonnay can hold its own against Burgundy, as the Terroir in the Valle de Parras closely resembles that of France. For centuries, the Terroir's potential for winemaking was recognized, leading to the establishment of the oldest winery in the Americas, which has thrived for 420 years. Many of the wines crafted in this region are well-crafted, complex, and balanced, allowing Mexicans to appreciate different experiments beyond the Valle de Guadalupe, exploring various grape varieties.
One of the initiatives aiming to spotlight Coahuila's wines is a brand called "Vinos de Coahuila," which features 22 productions from 9 different Coahuila municipalities. The goal is to promote education, research, and vine development, as well as the growth and promotion of the state's wine industry.
These wines enhance our appreciation of the region's cuisine. For instance, a Coahuila Merlot won't disappoint those who wish to pair it with hearty machaca beef or the region's famous stews featuring guajillo, cascabel, or pasilla chili peppers. A quality Coahuila Tempranillo can perfectly complement red enchiladas with golden-fried potatoes. And a cool Coahuila Chardonnay can beautifully pair with a delightful sopita de chicales (a regional soup).
We encourage you to visit and explore this region. It currently boasts more than six "magical towns," excellent quality hotels, and world-class wineries. The Coahuila wine route is truly worthwhile – take a journey and you'll comprehend its global significance.
